This carbine cartridge box is an original example of the classic leather accoutrement carried by Federal mounted forces during the Civil War.
This specimen is constructed of strong, black bridle leather. When closed, the large leather outer flap and smaller inner flap protect the ammunition in the box. Affixed to the outer flap is a small oval brass plate. The strong outer flap has a mild scalloped front edge. Leather is good with light crazing. Stitched and riveted to the outer flap is a closure tab that remains unbroken.
Inner flap is stamped with slightly worn maker’s mark, “__ / MAKERS / NEW YORK” and retains both side “ears”. The inner flap closes over a small implement pouch sewn to the front of the box.
The drilled wood cartridge block is present and is drilled with 20 holes.
Bottom of box has a brass finial and two black japanned roller buckles. On the box’s back side there remains two of the vertical, leather belt loops that were cut away, with a single horizontal leather strap. The stitching is strong and tight.
A good example of a Civil War Federal carbine cartridge box, with possible militia usage. [jet] [ph:L]
