This cartridge box is constructed of black bridle leather with very weak “US” embossing on flap, with finial & straps, 24 webbed cartridge slots, and two reverse belt loops. Front flap is soft and pliable. Finial & finial strap good and secure.
This is a US Model 1872 Hanger No. 2 leather Cartridge box with bored wood insert for .45-70 cartridges. This classic Indian Wars cartridge box is embossed "N.G.P." on the front flap (for National Guard Pennsylvania) and is marked "WATERVLIET / ARSENAL / A.R. SMITH" on the back. The pouch is in good condition with crazed surface on the flap. There are two solid belt loops in the back and front closure flap; brass finial on bottom. Brass wire hinge. The stepped wood insert has 16 drilled holes. Rivets, stitching, and belt loops are tight and solid. Leather is soft from leather treatment.
