This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box complete with shoulder sling, tins, and both plates.
Outer flap exhibits light crazing of the finish. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box by a leather thong. Closing tab is complete and unbroken. Tab is sewn to the underside of the flap. The inner flap is marked but now only “1864” is truly visible; likely was “Watertown / Arsenal / 1864” originally. This flap covers two cartridge tins that remain (dividers gone). This inner flap retains both “ears” tightly sewn in place. The implement pouch is present and also in good condition. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken. Belt straps are sewn and riveted. Brass finial on the bottom. Iron buckles were sewn only; both remain tightly attached.
Box measures approximately 7” x 1.75” x 5” (for the .58 cal. elongated ball). The two tin inserts held musket cartridges. A 2” wide shoulder belt, ornamented with a brass eagle breast plate, is attached through belt loops and buckled to bottom of box. The strap is unbroken.
All leather had been heavily coated with some commercial leather treatment in the past. This has left a white waxy residue and feel to the leather.
The brass cartridge box plate and eagle shoulder belt plate are in good condition and appear original to the piece.
This is a complete infantry cartridge box with sling and both accoutrement plates. [jet][ph:L]
