This militia box has a lacquered outer flap and no signs of previous plate attachment. The dimensions of the box indicate it is a pattern of 1839 box, designed for use with .69 muskets of various models.
The body shows some crazing throughout, but retains much of the finished, black outer layer of leather. Leather Is dry, with a layer of fine dirt. Body stitching appears to be tight and intact, but the reverse is missing both the belt and shoulder strap loops. Both ears are present and secure, but the outer flap is detached along the top seams. Of interest are two rubberized buttons, stitched to the reverse with heavy thread – for attaching directly to a sling or suspending accoutrement. The outer flap is missing material at low right, and the closing tab is missing at the half. Brass finial is still securely attached. The Boyd and Sons logo stamp is boldly embossed on the inner flap, no implement pouch was attached during manufacture. Both original tins are secured tightly by the body.
An intriguing cartridge box for the collector and student of Civil War Era accoutrements. [cm][ph:L]
