This Civil War cartridge box appears to have been repurposed as a militia box, with a modified inner pouch, the addition of Japanned strap attachment studs to the reverse in place of belt loops, and a glossy lacquer finish on the outer flap. Crazing and finished layer loss are noted on the reverse and around the body of the box. The inner flap has been removed, while two cartridge tins are still housed within. The leather closure tab is stretched and dry, but complete and secure. Brass finial remains securely attached, though the surrounding leather is slightly distended from vigorous use and a hefty load. The inner flap is tagged “GEO. A. HARTY” with a pasted piece of antique, gold-embossed book leather. No sign of a box plate having ever been attached. Measurements are 8” x 7” x approximately 2.1”.
A multi-layered military artifact – perfect for display or the collector of more obscure Civil War Period accoutrements. [cm] [ph:L]
