This cartridge box is constructed of black bridle leather with very weak “US” embossing on flap, with finial & straps, 24 webbed cartridge slots, and two reverse belt loops. Front flap is soft and pliable. Finial & finial strap good and secure. Rivets, stitching, and belt loops are tight and solid. Leather is soft from leather treatment.
As discussed in “Indian War Cartridge Pouches, Boxes and Carbine Boots” by Dorsey, this Hagner No. 2 Cartridge Box has been modified for use by the Cavalry by reversing the positions of the closing tab and finial in order to make the closing tab more accessible to the mounted soldier. [jet] [ph:L]
