Pattern 1861 US cartridge box in good, solid condition. The outer flap was cut for a “US” box plate to be mounted in the center; it was removed and there is no plate included. The latch-tab is stitched to the flap and remains whole and unbroken. Leather is slightly stiff and shows light crazing overall.

The inner flap is unmarked and retains only one of the two side “ears”. The implement pouch is complete and very good. Both sides of the box are stamped “C.S. STORMS / MAKER, N.Y.”

There are still two good cartridge tins with this box. The bottom of the box features the typical brass finial and both of the iron roller buckles. Stitching remains strong overall with just the start of a separation at the corner where the “ear” is missing.  Belt loops attached to the back are sewn and riveted.

Christian Schaefer Storms was a prominent manufacturer of leather military accoutrements based in New York City during the Civil War. He is primarily known for producing cartridge boxes and percussion cap pouches. Storms was a prolific "early war" manufacturer. During the conflict, his firm produced approximately 15,000 cartridge boxes of the 1861 pattern.
