This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box. Outer flap exhibits some scuffing and crazing. Generally hard condition with a stiff outer flap. Oval “US” box plate is affixed to the face of the box. No thong on the inside holding the plate but, fits tight in the leather. Rear of plate maker marked “W.H SMITH/ BROOKLYN”, with the end of Smith and Brooklyn faded out. A period carved spot in the lead appears to have obscured some sort of writing. The edges of the plate also look to be rounded up, giving the outside a raised appearance.

Closing tab is broken at the loop and is missing the bottom half. Tab is sewn, with no rivet, to the underside of the flap. The inner flap is maker marked “A.W. DECROW/ MAKER/ BANGOR, ME.”. This flap covers two cartridge tins that remain intact but, shrunk in place. This inner flap retains both “ears” that are tightly attached. The implement pouch is present and also in good condition. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken. Belt straps are sewn and riveted. Brass finial on the bottom. Iron buckles were sewn on at one time and are both now missing.

Box measures approximately 7 ½”x 2 1/2” x 6” (for the .58 cal. elongated ball). [stp][ph:L]
