This leather cap pouch Has a long narrowing front flap that is 4 1/2 inches in length. It had 2 leather "ears" on each side but 1 is now missing. There is a secondary internal flap that is made of leather and has suffered some loss. The pouch proper is leather and measures 3 inches by 3 inches. It has a turned finial of brass for closure. There are two 1/2-inch-wide leather belt loops on the reverse that are sewn on the top and held by brass rivets on the bottom. The pouch is hand sewn and the leather is crazed overall but sound. On the reverse between the belt loops is a tiny stamp which may be that of the manufacturer? Stamped on the front flap is "17" which is about 1/2 inch tall and below this in 1/4-inch-high figures is "1 V 1".  These could be interpreted as 17 and 1st Virginia. Inside the box is a handwritten note that says: "CS Cap Pouch verified by Steve Mullinax Gettysburg Show 1998". Mr. Mullinax was an author and Confederate collector held in the highest regard.
