A U.S. regulation percussion cap pouch of the standard Federal pattern issued to infantry throughout the Civil War. The pouch is built of black bridle leather in the familiar form, with a one-piece outer flap whose closing tab is a continuation of the flap itself rather than a separately applied strap. The latch tab is unbroken and shows no tearing at the finial hole. The domed brass finial at the base of the pouch front is present, solid, and secure. Beneath the outer flap, the inner flap retains both of its sewn side protectors — the "ears" that keep the caps contained when the pouch is opened — firmly stitched in place. The reverse carries the regulation pair of narrow vertical belt loops, each stitched along its length and secured at the base with a domed rivet, allowing the pouch to ride on the waist belt at the soldier's right hip. All stitching is tight and complete, with no runs, breaks, or separations at the seams.  Measures approximately 3 1/4 inches wide by 3 3/4 inches high with the flap closed.

The pouch carries both of the markings expected on a contract-inspected example. The outer flap retains a faint oval sub-inspector's cartouche, its outline discernible but the lettering within largely effaced by finish loss and surface crazing — present and identifiable as an inspection mark, though no longer readable. The inner flap carries an impressed maker's stamp, lightly struck and partially obscured by the same crazing, its placement, four-line layout, and legible portions consistent with the well-documented "S.H. YOUNG / & CO. / NEWARK / N.J." marking found on this firm's accoutrements. The pouch is offered on that attribution.

Very good, showing honest field use. The leather is solid and retains good body throughout. Overall crazing and flaking of the black finish, heaviest along the fold of the outer flap, the flap edges, and the belt loops, exposing the brown leather beneath. The interior retains remnants of the wool fleece lining. Original folds and wear patterns are undisturbed. The pouch has not been cleaned, re-dyed, or restitched, and presents as an untouched, honestly worn example.

The percussion cap pouch was among the most essential items of a Federal infantryman's field equipment, worn on the waist belt to the right of the belt plate and carrying the copper caps that fired his musket. The wool fleece sewn into the interior held the caps steady and made them easy to seize with cold or fouled fingers, and a small pocket beneath the outer flap housed the nipple pick used to clear the cone.

S.H. Young & Co. of Newark, New Jersey, was one of the several Newark leather houses that supplied cap pouches and cartridge boxes to the Ordnance Department during the war. Newark was among the principal centers of American leather manufacture in this period, and its firms produced accoutrements in quantity under government contract. The oval flap cartouche is the mark of the civilian sub-inspector who passed the piece before it was accepted into stores — the ordinary evidence of a government contract accoutrement as opposed to a commercial or militia product.
