This is the classic Confederate cap box, constructed of brown leather with a long rectangular outer flap 3 1/2 inches by 4 inches across with scalloped lower edge and a separate, sewn latch tab. It has the ubiquitous purely Confederate lead finial. It has a typically Southern single 2-inch-wide belt loop on the reverse; hand stitched along the top and bottom edge. The short inner flap with its 2 side ears is also in place. The interior has the piece of sheepskin whose fleece, now missing, served to keep the caps inside when the flap was unlatched. The leather surface is excellent with a lovely patina of age. The end of the latch tab, as typically found, has broken across the lead finial but the errand piece has been retained and is inside the box. All stitching is tight. This one which we originally sold over 16 years ago is museum worthy. [pe][ph:L]
