This piece is designed for the .58 caliber rifle musket paper cartridges. The leather remains in excellent, supple condition. It retains a beautiful, deep black to brown finish with minimal crazing.

The outer flap is smooth and retains its original form. It includes an original oval “US” plate. The original brass finial is securely attached to the bottom. Both original roller buckles remain intact on the underside. The inner flap and side ears are complete and functional. The implement pouch is complete and retains an original nipple pick. The original flap closure tab remains intact. Both original tins are present inside the main compartment.  Stitching remains tight throughout. The box body measures 6.25” x 7.25” x 1.6”.

This specimen features no visible maker or inspector markings. This lack of marking is typical of certain contractor-produced gear or arsenal-made pieces intended for rapid field issue during the height of the conflict. This unmarked style, however, follows some manufactured before March of 1863 by Allegheny Arsenal.

This is a choice, unmodified example for the Civil War collector.    [cm][ph:L]
