A U.S. Army percussion cap pouch of the Civil War era, manufactured at the Watertown Arsenal in Massachusetts. The pouch retains its original rounded flap embossed in two lines: "WATERTOWN ARSENAL / U.S. / 1864," a maker/inspection mark commonly found on ordnance leather goods produced at that facility during the war.

CONSTRUCTION

Black leather body of the standard rounded-flap cap pouch pattern, with an inner flap (visible wool/lamb's-wool puff lining intact, used to seat percussion caps for easy retrieval) beneath the embossed outer flap. The closure is secured by a single brass finial/stud and loop. The reverse features the standard pair of belt loops for waist-belt wear, sewn with waxed thread, allowing the pouch to have been worn on a soldier's belt alongside a cap box or cartridge box.

CONDITION

Leather shows overall wear and finish loss consistent with age and Civil War-period field use, with some surface cracking and thinning visible along the flap edges and body. Stitching is intact throughout. The Watertown Arsenal stamp remains legible, if somewhat shallow from wear. The wool lining puff is present, aged, and soiled as expected.    [ss][ph:L]
