This is a Civil War-era percussion cap pouch in generally good overall condition. The outer flap features an embossed oval with “USN” in the center. There is some debate whether this embossing was done during or after the war. This style pouch has the integral closing tab as an extension of the outer flap. The latch tab is unbroken. The outer flap shows moderate crazing.
The interior flap has both inner “ears” firmly sewn in place. Flap stamped “E. METZGER / PHILA” and H.H. HARZEL / U.S / ORD DEPT / SUB-INSPECTOR”. This flap also has some surface crazing. No fleece remains; no nipple pick.
Bottom has brass finial. Both narrow belt loops remain in place on back and are stitched and riveted. All stitching is strong and intact.
A nice original Civil War cap pouch with “USN” embossed on flap. [jet][ph:L]
