This is a complete U.S. Pattern 1861 cartridge box for .69 caliber ammunition. It still has its "US" oval box plate and both original tin liners. The box is made of black bridle leather and is sewn throughout, and it keeps all of its major components. These include the outer flap with plate, the inner flap, the front implement pocket with its tab closure, the brass finial on the bottom, both iron roller buckles on the side tabs and both vertical belt loops on the back.
The Pattern 1861 box was the standard U.S. infantry cartridge box at the start of the Civil War. The .69 caliber version was sized for the larger cartridges fired by the Model 1842 musket, rifled conversions, and the many older .69 caliber arms that were altered to percussion and issued to volunteer regiments in 1861 and 1862.
The flap carries a stamped brass Pattern 1839 "US" oval plate. It has a pleasing, mellow patina, and the letters are strong. Light surface scratching is noted.
Condition is generally good. The leather is supple, with a crackled grain surface, scattered scuffs and some creasing to the outer flap. The stitching is intact throughout. On the underside of the outer flap, the closing tab is worn and there is a loose sling buckle. Both tins are present and solid, with light rust along the seams and edges. The iron buckles have an even dark patina, and there is light verdigris around the riveted attachment points of the belt loops.
Dimensions are approx. 8 in. wide x 5 1/2 in. high measured across the box. [cm][ph:L]
