This Civil War artifact is an original, leather haversack typical of the accoutrements carried by officers, both Confederate and Federal, while they were in the field.
A private purchase, this large, machine-sewn haversack is constructed of thin black leather on the exterior with interior pockets and linings of painted or tarred cloth. The large canvas pouch, narrower at the top and wider at the bottom, measures approximately 10” tall x 11” wide x 2” deep. The outer flap has a thin tape edge sewn in place. Constructed much like regulation knapsacks, this has pockets on each side with open “tops” facing each other toward the center line. When folded closed and carried, the deeper pocket half forms the main body and the other is the outer flap. The haversack is held closed by a buckle-down leather strap.
Both inner pockets have lid-flaps with buckle-down leather straps. The larger, main pocket has four enameled tin buttons; a linen bag remains buttoned to these. An additional pocket is sewn to the front of this main body pocket.
An adjustable leather shoulder strap with roller buckle is attached with rings at the sides. Two very weak spots with tears on the sling. The haversack is in generally good condition but it does suffer from scattered tears and moderate wear.
