This belt holster was made for a small revolver, likely a “pocket model” of some sort, very typical of those carried by infantry line officer as a sidearm for personal defense in addition to the regulation sword. Foot officers who wanted or were able to lug a Colt Navy or its equivalent, much less a Colt Army, on long marches were few and far between. Pistols of .31 or .32 caliber likely offered little more than a sense of satisfaction on the battlefield, but were a lot lighter and could still come in handy.

Officers’ sidearms were privately purchased, and this holster shows a nicely tooled edge around the flap and a small flower button rather than heavy brass stud as a finial. It has seen use and has period repairs to keep it in service. The belt loop has clearly been resewn in the period, if not replaced, and the crudeness of the stitching matches that along the upper edge of the side and across the upper back along the lower rear edge of the flap. The leather shows some rubbing and oxidation of the finish from black to brown, but is still solid and displayable. It would make a good addition to an officer’s display. [sr] [ph:m/L]
