This is a non-regulation leather holster made to accommodate a revolver such as a Colt Pocket Model or one of the larger Smith & Wesson revolvers.
The holster measures 9” along the front edge of the pocket. Holster is made from one piece of bridle leather. Flap was closed by sliding the tab extending from the flap through the thin strap sewn to the front of the body. The belt loop is 1” wide, secured by stitching on top and bottom. It appears to be a period replacement as there are other stitching holes from a wider, previous belt loop. Holster’s nose cap remains in place.
Leather remains smooth and pliable and is in overall good condition. There is some cracking of the surface finish over the “hinge” area on the flap. A faded and unreadable stencil can be found on the underside of the flap. The stitching along back seam is unbroken except for 1.5” of separation at the top.
This is a fine, non-regulation flap holster of the Civil War. [jet] [ph:L]
