This extremely fine, original condition leather accoutrement is a complete Civil War flap holster of the type worn by countless officers, cavalrymen and soldiers during the Civil War, and after the War. The rugged specimen was produced by Newark, NJ maker William Kinsey & Co. In May 1864, William Kinsey had army contracts for 5,000 saber belts & plates, 1,033 holsters, 600 pistol cartridges boxes, 4,000 cap boxes, as well as carbine slings.
Holster measures over 15” long with its flap closed and easily accommodates the large martial .44 sidearm such as the Colt Army or Remington New Model revolver. The body of this leather specimen is cut from a large, single piece of thick, black bridle leather and folded over, machine-stitched and riveted to form the main body. Exterior leather body is remarkable with tight original stitching. Leather flap is excellent but does exhibit slight crazing with some light flaking to the exterior at the hinge area. Original leather closure tab is strong, very good condition with no tearing or ripping. Tab shows very light flaking in spots due to flexing and is attached to the flap via one copper rivet and stitched in a crescent line. The pear-shaped brass finial is strongly secured to the holster body.
A very fine, 3½” wide, thick leather belt loop is folded over and riveted with six brass rivets on the holster backside. Loop has one small cut hole (1/8” dia) near upper front edge. All seam stitching is original, tight and strong. Has one small section (½” long) where stitching has lightly separated near the edge seam. Visible on the inside flap are the impressions made in the leather from the butt of a revolver. The holster muzzle retains its leather plug that is in excellent condition. A remarkably strong, maker-marked leather revolver holster that was there is in very excellent original condition. This belt holster easily fits into any fine accoutrement collection or cavalry display. [ra][ph:L]
