The hefty .44 Colt Dragoon revolver was intended to be carried in saddle holsters. It was only with the adoption of the lighter M1851 .36 Colt Navy in 1855 that the army gave serious consideration to a belt holster, though an 1853 report from Texas indicated soldiers had taken things into their own hands to some degree and the practice of wearing pistols on the sword or waistbelt was “universal.” The army adopted the M1860 Colt .44 Army, much lighter and more suited for belt wear, but there were still many Colt dragoons in use and this is a very good example of a military belt holster made for one. As is typical, it has a full flap and holds the pistol butt-forward on the wearer’s right. The latch tab is an early style, secured by a single, straight line of stitching to the flap. Similarly, the belt loop on the back, while wide, is secured by stitching alone, not using any rivets, though with an additional,  short vertical line of stitching near the bottom center to strengthen the connection.

The condition is very good. The latch tab is secure; the brass finial is present; there are no holes or tears in the leather; the seams are good; the toe plug is in place. The holster is solid, retaining some stiffness to the leather, and has a good finish, black in color shifting slightly toward brown, with crazing to the finish, but little flaking, just one or two small abrasions on the flap and a couple of very small edge nicks.

This would be a very good addition to a display of cavalry accoutrements and, needless to say, if you have a Colt Dragoon, you should seriously think about a holster for it.  [sr] [ph:L]
