A 19th-century black leather flap holster for a single-action revolver, distinguished by a patented metal turn-closure. The riveted circular metal disc and retaining tab are stamped "PAT'D APR. 2 1863," dating the closure hardware to the American Civil War period. The metal latch secured the flap over the pistol grip. Notably, the patent marking appears on the metal fastener rather than the leather, indicating the patent covered the clasp mechanism itself.
Constructed of heavy leather with hand-stitched seams along the body and toe, the holster measures approximately 7.5" along the short (front) edge. Consistent with its age, the leather shows extensive surface craquelure, darkening, and edge wear throughout, while remaining structurally sound. The metal clasp retains its legible stamping and is intact. A solid, displayable example of patented martial leather goods from the Civil War era.
Condition: Good antique condition; leather dry and crazed but sound, closure functional. [ss][ph:L]
