This is a well-used Western-style holster with a slim, open-top pocket sized for a small-frame revolver or compact pistol. The front is decorated with a stamped rope-and-line border that follows the holster’s outline, sweeping in a graceful S-curve around the trigger guard and running the length of the barrel pocket. The pocket is sewn with a single line of light tan stitching along the lower edge and around the rounded, closed toe. Reinforced with a single iron split rivet in the left corner.
The holster uses a one-piece back skirt with a cut belt loop. The pocket passes through two vertical slits in the skirt, which secures it and forms the belt channel behind it. The finish is a deep chestnut to oxblood brown on the front, while the back skirt has darkened to a near-black brown from years of wear against the body. The reverse of the pocket, protected by the skirt, still shows a rich reddish-brown color close to the original finish. A faint impression has been imparted by the original weapon. It appears to have been a revolver, such as a Colt Lightning or other double action.
Dimensions (approximate)
Overall length: 8 in.
Overall height (top of skirt to bottom edge): 5 1/4 in.
Pocket width at muzzle end: 2 in.
Belt loop opening: up to 3 in.
Condition
Good overall, with honest age and service wear. The leather is solid and supple and holds its shape well, with no tears, splits, or missing sections.
On the front, the finish shows scuffing, surface crazing, and finish loss on the high points, most noticeably along the upper edge, across the cylinder area, and toward the muzzle. The tooled border is still clear and legible throughout. The stitching appears complete and tight, with no loose or broken runs. The rivet is present and secure.
The back skirt shows heavy handling wear, with a matte, rubbed surface, scattered light scratches, and edges worn smooth and rounded. The loop itself is intact and functional.
This is a nice, honest example of a tooled Western holster with good eye appeal and character. [stp] [ph:L]
