In 1859, an updated version of the P1851 scabbard was adopted to accompany the new series of infantry accoutrements that had been approved in 1857. This new Pattern 1859 scabbard added two reinforcing rivets at the junction between the belt loop and the leather piece sewn around the throat of the scabbard.
This example is complete and unmarked. It retains its dark, black finished leather – a buff loop and bridle leather body. A crease is noted below the loop frog. Stitching is intact and finial is secure (though the brass attachment tacks are not present). Loop diameter is 2.25” and overall length is 18”.
An honest, displayable example of a ubiquitous Civil War accoutrement. [cm][ph:L]
