A very good condition pair of brass spurs following the general lines of Civil War issue M1859 enlistedman’s spurs, as would be worn by cavalrymen or mounted light-artillerymen, but with silvered and very detailed starburst rowels. The heel band is plain, rounded on the exterior, slotted for a spur strap at either end and, like most issue enlisted spurs, made without a groove on the interior and with the neck coming off the top edge of the heel band and having a slightly rounded tip. In contrast to the pointed, but plain rowels of issue spurs, however, the rowels are detailed in relief on both sides to represent a starburst, with fifteen prominent rays with slightly rounded, pointed tips, separated by shorter rays defined by a lower central ridge with a groove on either side.
There are no bends or breaks. The points of the rowels are all there. The brass, certainly gilt originally, now has an untouched, aged patina with scattered age spots. The ends of the rowel pins show some brown crustiness. The rowels themselves are excellent, showing a muted silver color with some scattered light brown and some spots of light green verdigris, but have no breaks or missing points. When in original polish and the heel bands showing gold and the starburst rowels, silver they would have been quite showy and even more impressive, though not gaudy- for use by a fighting officer in the field and not just on the parade ground.
