Basque bodice and skirt constructed from peacock blue silk taffeta lined with brown glazed cotton. The bodice features a round neckline and open coat sleeves. The sleeves and peplum are trimmed with black Chantilly lace that was added after the initial construction. The peplum is slashed at the side and side back seams for a graceful fit over the crinoline. The bodice is machine-sewn with hand-overcast seams and closes with brass hooks-and-eyes attached with a continuous thread.
The hand-sewn skirt is unlined with a deep hem facing of brown glazed cotton and blue wool hem tape at the bottom edge. It has a single box pleat at the center front, with directional pleats on either side facing the center back opening. The configuration of the original pleating was maintained when the skirt was shortened and attached to a scrap waistband sometime after the original construction. The skirt could easily be restored to its original length.
