A lovely ensemble made from a stunning period textile. This medium-heavy weight silk taffeta has a satin ribbon stripe woven into the fabric. The basque bodice has a round neckline and closes with 21 pairs of hooks-and-eyes sewn approximately ⅝" apart. The machine sewn bodice is lined in deep brown cotton twill; the lower edge of the basque is lined in very lightweight green silk. The sleeves are lined in lightweight green glazed cotton. The original undersleeves are still basted inside the sleeves. The fine muslin undersleeves have a double flounce at the lower edge embellished with whitework embroidery.
The hand-sewn gauged skirt was altered sometime after the original construction to update the style with a flat front and wide pleats. The skirt is lined in lightweight glazed green cotton. A portion of the original waistband with a hanger loop remains; there is a pocket in the right front skirt seam. The hem is finished with a very stiff coarse muslin hem facing and wool hem braid.
