Salt-glazed jug, from Westerwald (Germany). Made for British markets with a GR cypher. Incised and brushed in cobalt. Measures 6 ½” tall x 2 ¾” across base. In excallent condition.

One of the most common forms of pottery imported to the American Colonies during the 17th and 18th centuries was a white salt glazed stoneware from the Westerwald or “Western Forest” region of Germany. Westerwald pieces were utilitarian vessels which included such items as mugs, jugs, chamber pots, and tea pots. They were made of a white clay which turned light grey upon firing. The majority of Westerwald pieces were colored with Cobalt Blue and/or Manganese pigments. These pigments were utilized due to their ability to withstand the high temperatures of a stoneware kiln.  [jet]
