The elegant bridle is in excellent condition. All reins, buckles, straps, etc., are in place and secure. It is fitted with 2-inch diameter brass side bosses with raised wreath borders and central panels showing an eagle standing on a perch surrounded by thirteen stars. The browband and noseband are both made with yellow leather centers bound by black leather borders and are joined by an elongated X that is decorated with a band of flat, braided yellow leather. The scarce leather curb strap is also in place.
The bit is a brass-faced 1847 style dragoon bit identical to those illustrated in Dorsey and McPheeters on pages 370-371 and in McPheeters and Dorsey as Plates 3,5,6, and 7, with the brass facing on the exterior and interior of the cheek pieces. The brass is subdued in tone and shows age spotting, and few spots of rubbing, mostly on the inside but is 90 percent or better. We have not tried to clean it. The bit has integral flat round opening at top for the bridle cheek pieces and both large and small rings for double reins. One of the large upper rings is out of round from use, but all are secure and both sets of reins are full length, complete, and in excellent condition. The reins are looped through the rings and secured with horseshoe buckles. The set attached to the upper rings are two lengths sewn together at the mid-point. The lower reins buckle together at the midpoint with a horseshoe buckle.
This is a great looking set of cavalry horse gear. The condition is outstanding. It shows some age, but no tears, breaks or damage. It would look fantastic with a saddle or just arranged on a form to show how it was set up and show off the workmanship. This actually elicited a “wow” from a bystander when we opened the box. Old habits die hard. Although we now know production of the new pattern cavalry saber intended to replace the heavy Model 1840 started in 1857, most still refer to them as the Model 1860. This is a scarce example of one produced by Ames in 1859 and… (2022-718). Learn More »
