Plaid silk cuff details, pockets, and collar adorn faded black silk on this child’s frock. Although the silk of the dress is shattered in many places, this is a great example of a dress which would have been worn by a child whose parents were more affluent. The details of this dress have been very thoughtfully chosen and the fabric choice indicates that the wearer was well taken care of.

The dress is asymmetrically closed by 18 ruby glass etched buttons; the first of which is missing. The coarsely woven silk is somewhat sheer and is backed by a light calico cotton.  The dress is lined in a dark plum colored calico. The dress measures 23 inches in length from the top of the collar to the bottom hem.

The back has a plaid waist detail which rests atop a pleated “skirt.” I say “skirt” because the body of the dress is all one piece but the bottom portion of the back has the pleated detail.

The sleeves are quintessential Civil War period style with their curvature at the elbow. There is a removable plaid silk collar or bib that matches this piece as well. It is not attached to the dress.

Again, the silk fabric of this dress is beginning to shatter in several places due to age. It is not suitable for wear and should be handled with care.  [cla] [ph:L]
