Offered here is a hand carved wood neckerchief slide. Well carved and ornate, it was presented to “Isabel Colman” by an unfortunately unidentified soldier.
Wood slide measures 1.75” in diameter and 1.13” tall. Carving includes an oval with “ISABEL” inside, crossed pistols, crossed sabers, and crossed cannons with “5”. Since the artillery insignia is the only one with a specific unit number, I suspect that he was likely an artilleryman.
Pasted inside the slide is a paper label with pen and ink inscription, “Made for Isabel Colman, 1862, by a friend, soldier in the Union Army. Briar Wood.”
This is a fine piece of pocket-knife craftmanship, unfortunately without the soldier’s name. [jet] [ph:L]
