This piece matches known examples attributed to individual soldiers during their Civil War service – both officers and enlisted men. As soldiers passed through high-traffic areas or set up static camps, sutlers and merchants were ready to sell the men any possible convenience.
This ivory day planner is joined near the lower edge by a decorative stud, allowing the planner to unfold like a personal fan. A metal clasp at the top holds it closed, and a decorative metal shield is tacked into the front face. Including the front and rear panels, there are 8 in total, with 6 labeled Monday-Saturday respectively in a scrimshaw style with light black color fill (which has faded somewhat). A very slight crack is noted near the rear clasp where it is affixed to the back panel. The rest are undamaged and show appropriate age-related yellowing. Overall measurements are 1.15” x 3.4”.
A very neat piece for the collector of the smaller and under-appreciated items of the soldiering experience. Ideal for a detailed and well-rounded display. [cm] [PH:L]
