A black silk memoriam ribbon of the O.U.A.M. with black cockade and gold metallic star at the top. A miniature Abraham Lincoln “gem-type” affixed just under the cockade. An American red, white and blue flag is stitched on separately in the center with a white fringe across the bottom. The overall size is 2 ½” by 9”. The Lincoln tintype measures 7/8” by 1”. The condition is excellent with all of the cloth. The tintype is housed in a gold gilt metal frame that is slightly oxidized. The surface of the tintype shows one small bubble outline of corrosion.
The Order of United American Mechanics were founded in Philadelphia in 1844-45, as a result of anti-immigrant sentiments formed during the mid-1840’s depression. Unlike other Nativist societies that sprang up in the 1840s and 1850s, the OAUM was able to survive the Civil War. By 1896 there were State Councils in twenty-one states and the order had 60,000 members. [stp] [ph:L]
