Woman’s black velvet fanchon c.1870-1880, mounted on a wire frame. Black silk velvet is gathered over the flared brim and the flat band base. A cluster of flowers and leaves in shades of gold and purple accents the front of the brim. A small black ostrich feather is attached to the right point and extends to the front of the fanchon.
A narrow black silk vandyked edging is inserted between the brim and band. A strip of black velvet covered with a 2½° deep lace edging covers the base and extends in a continuous loop from one tip to the other. The 34° hanging loop is pleated at the center front and 4° on either side to allow the loop and lace edging to hang flat against the body. Ombré silk ribbons, 24° long, in shades of gold, purple, and black are attached to each tip and hang loosely along the velvet loop.
Brim 15° at front, 13° at back, 2° deep at center front. Condition very good – excellent; all lace intact. [cs][ph:L]
