1860-1870 woman’s fanchon cap or bonnet, a charming concoction of black velvet ribbon edged with fine white lace. A very similar cap can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object no. 2009.300.4606.
The cap is built on two metal wires covered in black velvet ribbon and joined at the ends. The front and back wires are joined with a cop of white spotted net. An 8" thin silk cord is attached to each end of the wires; this cord slips under the dressed hair at the nape of the neck, holding the cap in place. The cord is concealed by two 9" ribbon and lace streamers that are joined at the nape of the neck, with a 4½" bow at the nape of the neck.
The front wire or brim of the cap is covered in a plethora of ½" wide ribbon loops edged with white lace. A rosette of ⅛" black velvet ribbon loops accents the center front. Laid over the cap are three ribbon-and-lace streamers, beginning at the front with flat loops, wrapped over and around the back wire, and hanging down over the back of the head. Dotted net lappets are attached to each side of the cap and are cut on a 45° angle at the ends. Narrow black ribbon edges the lappets, with 1" long ribbon loops attached every 1.5". A strip of the narrow lace edging is slipped through the loops but is not held in place with stitching.
Measurements: Front wire 15", back wire 11". Cap 5" deep at center. Center streamer at the back of the cap: 7" below back wire, plus one 5½" streamer on either side of the center. Lappets 15" long, 4¼" wide at the widest point. Condition very good - excellent. [cs][ph:L]
