This tiny, formal girl’s dress c.1880, from the Texas Civil War Museum, is made of ivory silk satin. It is embellished with multiple rows of shirring, unusual chemical lace trimming, silk moiré ribbon bows, and carved pearl buttons. The elaborate construction and embellishments make this little bustle dress sufficiently formal for any event.

The dress is cut with an extended dropped waistline; the two-tiered flounced skirt has extra fullness in the back creating a slight bustle effect. The dress was originally made with an open neckline: V-shaped in the front and scooped in the back, accented with a ruffle with five spaced rows of shirring. The open neckline was filled in after initial construction with a gathered insert featuring 13 rows of spaced shirring finished with a ¾" ruffle.

The bodice has a pleated front accented with six carved pearl buttons in three different sizes. The back of the bodice has three stitched vertical diagonal tucks on either side of the center back opening. Four of the same pearl buttons and several sets of hooks-and-eyes close the back of the bodice. The bodice is lined in cotton twill; the seam allowances are cut in scallops and bound with self-fabric. The narrow sleeves are shaped with a dart at the elbow. The top of each sleeve is accented with a band of 23 rows of spaced shirring. A similar band of shirring, finished with a self-fabric ruffle at the top, is placed at the bottom of each sleeve. These lower bands are covered with a band of lace, obscuring most of the shirring.

The skirt is made of two separate flounces. Each flounce is constructed with a band of nine rows of spaced shirring. The lower portion of each flounce has a deep ruffle covered with the same lace. Each of the skirt flounces is supported with an underskirt of stiffened tarlatan with a gathered double layer, lace edged ruffle. A wide ivory silk moiré ribbon bow accents the right shoulder. A length of the same ribbon accents the dropped waistline and is used to create a large bow at the left center front and another large bow at the bottom of the center back opening. The dress is entirely hand-sewn.

Measurements: Chest = 26", waist = 24", hip = 28", overall length = 26", skirt circumference at hem without ruffle = 60". Condition: Very good; all lace and fastenings intact; no visible stains.  [cs] [ph:L]
