Group of four 1870s ‘Figure Enhancers’ – An unusual and rare false bosom and three bustles from the Texas Civil War Museum.
A. Quilted cotton bustle pad. Elongated kidney shape covered with lightly-glazed greige cotton. Wadded with what feels like excelsior. Random quilting with very long stitches. Two cotton twill tape ties. Measurements: Width at top = 19". Length at center = 6”. Depth= 1¼" at thickest part, tapering to nothing at outer edges. Tape ties = 7¼" and 12". Long. Condition: Fair to Good. Wadding crushed in some areas; end of shorter tape tie may be torn off.
B. Blue and white woven stripe cotton bustle pad. Deep ‘U’- shape, wadded with a combination of excelsior and cotton. Machine quilted with self-fabric ties. Measurements: Width at top = 16". Length along outer edge = 29". Depth at center = 7½". Depth at thickest part = 1½". Ties = 14" and 15". Condition = Good; some age discoloration.
C. Beige muslin bustle pad. Rectangular shape with curved lower edges. Shaped into three sections with the use of two vertical slits, one on either side of the center, allowing the bustle pad to curve over the top of the wire bustle. The slits may have also allowed the bustle to be secured in place with webbing or twill tape strap. Machine sewn; wadded with excelsior; two tape ties. Measurements: Width at top = 12½". Length along outer edge = 23". Depth at center = 5½". Depth at thickest part = ¾". Ties = 17" (appears to have been cut off at end) and 19". Condition: Fair; significant age discoloration and soiling; tear at upper edge at center sloppily mended.
D. An unusual and rare false bosom made of beige muslin. The outer layer is made from plain weave muslin. It is cut in three sections, with shaping for cups on either side of a flat center section. The lining, made from a thinner, more loosely-woven muslin is cut flat, without shaping. The cups are stuffed with excelsior; the outer edges are bound with cotton twill tape. There is no evidence of straps or ties; there are remnants of loose basting stitches indicating the false bosom may have been basted to the inside of the corset. Exterior measurements: Each cup = 5½" wide x 6" high. Center section = 2½" wide x 4 ½" high. Estimated shaping equivalent to a modern B cup. Condition: Fair; significant age discoloration and soiling; stains along the outer and lower edges of each cup; some minor wear spots. [cs][ph:L]
