Two black silk paletots from the Texas Civil War Museum
1307-39a – A dramatic, elegant, and unusual paletot made entirely of panels of narrow black silk braid sewn into a complicated design of lattice-work and flowers. The panels are joined with a wider black silk braid. The paletot is styled with stand collar that flows into large squared lapels. The front closes with a pair of heavy black silk buttons with a single loop closure. The long, slim sleeves are slit and flared at the wrist, and are accented at the bottom with the wide silk braid and at the slit with two buttons. The back of the paletot is separated into three sections from the waist to the hem. Each section is edged with the wide black braid and accented with three sets of buttons on each side of the slits. The paletot is fully lined with black silk. Each of the bottom corners is weighted to ensure the paletot hangs properly. Condition: Very Good. There are a few areas where the stitching holding the narrow braid together has separated but could easily be repaired.
1307-39b – An unlined black silk paletot c.1900 closes with fabric covered buttons and extends to the hip. It has a turned-down collar, lapels, long sleeves with puffs at the shoulders, and turned back cuffs. The cuffs are trimmed with silk braid at the top. There is damage at the shoulders, the underarms, and the left side of the skirt. Condition: Poor. [cs][ph:L]
