Group of three 1880s-1890s black silk bodices from the Texas Civil War Museum. Although black is traditionally associated with mourning, black was also a fashion color.

1307-37a is a stylish jacket made from black silk taffeta. Black silk braid is used to create the semblance of a pointed collar, bib front, and trims the vertical front and back seams and all of the outer edges of the jacket. The jacket has slightly-puffed sleeves that are pleated into a band at the wrist. Shaped turned-back cuffs, trimmed with wide braid and soutache, are attached to the bottom of the sleeves. The front of the jacket closes with hooks-and-eyes. The bodice is lined in thin white China silk and is sadly shattering. However, the damaged lining allows us to see the hair canvas supporting the structure of the jacket, and the layer of wool wadding padding the upper chest. Condition: Exterior is very good; the lining is very poor.

1307-37b is an unusual two-piece jacket bodice and underbodice. The short, black silk jacket has a V-neckline and front hook-and-eye closure The puffed sleeves end just below the elbow and may have been shortened after the original construction. Two parallel rows of soutache braid trim the outer edges of the jacket. A vertical pattern of the same parallel rows of soutache and a fancy black velvet braid rim the upper portion of the front of the jacket. The fitted black cotton underbodice is made from lightweight glazed cotton. The upper portion of the sleeves are made from black cotton batiste; the lower sleeves and cuffs are made from black cotton jacquard woven in a floral pattern. Hook-and-eye closures on the front of the underbodice and the cuffs. Condition: Jacket is in good condition, with a worn area in the lining at the back neck. The underbodice is in good condition with a few small scattered holes.

1307-37c is a black silk twill evening bodice with a local neckline and front hook-and-eye closure. Very short puffed sleeves are gathered into a band. There are remnants of a black lace edging at the neckline. Some of the boning is still present. Condition: Fair.    [cs][ph:L]
