Blankets were items of military issue during the Civil War, but the wave of new volunteers both north and south overwhelmed recruiting services who scrambled to acquire and issue anything suitable from local and regional sources, resulting in a variety of colors and patterns, especially early in the war, but evident for quite some time in private purchases by officers, gifts from home by concerned family members, and others. Men joining companies in rural areas might be most disposed to bringing things from home, but even militia companies who might be uniformed and armed might not be well equipped for field service. As late as mid-1862 a New York City national guard regiment called up for active service had to tell its members to bring their own forks, knives and spoons.

This is a very good condition Civil War period white center-seam homespun fabric blanket 77” wide and 78” long overall, with narrow, hemmed top and bottom edge, but raw sides, and is constructed of two 38-1/2” by 78” panels joined by a long center seam. The color is good and there are few stains- we see just five or six 1” diameter thin stains in one spot. There are no large holes or frayed sections. We just scattered small pencil eraser or pencil point size moth bites, none obtrusive or affecting the integrity of the blanket or its display. This is typical of what a soldier might have brought or received from home. Needless to say, it would likely be most suitable as part of a Confederate or western theatre display, but would make a good addition to any collection of camp gear.  [sr] [ph:L]
