A pair of hand-knitted lace stockings from the Texas Civil War Museum. The stockings are knitted with very fine linen yarn at a gauge of 24 stitches/inch. The legs of the stockings are knit in a vertical design of plain stockinette stitch alternating with lace in a zig-zag design. The garter band at the top, knitted horizontally, has a band of consecutive arrowheads with a narrow openwork edging at the top and a band of offset eyelets where the band joins the leg. The foot is knitted in plain stockinette with a common heel. Foot: heel-to-toe = 7¼". Length heel-to-top-of-band: One leg is 21", the other is 18". Circumferences of band: 11" and 10". Condition: Fair to good; Lace knitting is intact with no holes. Some wear at top of band. Some stains on top of feet and at toes, possible from leather shoes. Mends on both toes. [cs][ph:L]
