Charming woven straw hat from the Texas Civil War Museum. The low crowned hat is made from natural straw plait intertwined with very narrow avocado green ribbon that has been pleated and twisted into loops. The crown is accented with bows made from black velvet or dark green grosgrain ribbons; it is lined in black glazed cotton. The shaped brim is faced with dark green velvet, and is turned up at the center back to show another green ribbon bow. The edge of the brim is wired.

Overall measurements:  9" front to back, 8.5" side to side. Crown: 5.5" front to back, 5" side to side. Brim: 3" deep in the front, tapering to 2" at the center back.

Condition: Fair. There are two spots on the crown where the plait is broken. The ribbons show areas of discoloration and wear. The velvet facing on the brim has extensive wear and some fading. A good example of mid-19thc millinery for display or study.  [cs][ph:L]
