High-crown straw spoon bonnet, c. 1862-1864, from the Texas Civil War Museum. The bonnet is made from light brown natural straw plait. The high front brim and the slope to the crown in the back give the bonnet its name. the bonnet retains its original trimmings of very wide green and white plaid silk ribbon bows and loops and fabric flowers. An interior band of millinery buckram, covered in brown velvet and trimmed with an additional ribbon bow and flowers, helps keep the bonnet on the head. The shaped brim creates a curtain at the nape of the neck; there is no evidence of a fabric curtain every being attached.
Overall measurements: Length from top to bottom 15"; width 11". Brim: 5½" deep at center front; 1½" deep at center back.
Condition: Fair. The straw is solid with no breaks but is misshapen from storage. The ribbon is strong with no shattering and minimal fading. The fabric flowers are badly faded, misshapen, and are shedding. [cs][ph:L]
