Straw hat c. 1855-1865 from the Texas Civil War Museum. The hat is made from very fine straw plait, styled with low crown and a wide brim. The brim is finished with a decorative woven straw edging. A separate lace edging made from cotton and straw accents the edge of the brim. The crown is decorated with multiple rosettes of very sheer silk organza; the same silk organza is used to create a lightly-gathered brim facing. The crown is lined with white, plain weave silk. A small cluster of deep pink rose buds and green leaves is sewn to the inside edge off the brim at the right front. The ties are made from plain weave cotton with very fine drawn-thread hemstitching along the side and bottom hems.
Overall Measurements: 13” side to side, 11.5” front to back. Crown: 6” side-to-side; 5.5” front-to-back, 2.25” deep. Brim with edging: 4.25” wide in the front, 4” at sides, 3” at the back. Ties: 6.5” wide, 31” long.
Condition: Fair-Good. Straw is intact, with minor crushing on the right side of the crown. The silk trimming is badly soiled and discolored. The lining is starting to shatter. Ties are dirty, stained, and creased. [cs][ph:L]
