Exquisite black lace, ribbon, and net fancy cap c.1855-1865 from the Texas Civil war museum collection. The crown of the cap is made from black cotton bobbinet with a small scattered floral motif, and is mounted on a band of still black millinery net; there is no wire frame. The band is cut with a 2½" point at the center front, tapering to 1½" on either side, then widening to 2" over the ears, then tapering 1¼" at the center back. The bottom of the band has a ¼" black silk binding. The band is covered with a lightly-gathered edging of black Chantilly lace, with an additional row of lace edging along the center front point and over the ears. Short lengths of folded and gathered plain black cotton bobbinet add additional fullness over the ears and at the center back. A band of 1" black silk taffeta ribbon is used to create ¼" spaced box-pleated ruching that covers the top of the lace edging and multiple ribbon loops over each ear. A composed bow with double loops and two streamers made from 1¾" black silk ribbon accents the center back of the cap.
Provenance: Tags indicate the cap was part of at least two museum collections before becoming part of the Texas Civil War Museum collection. One tag is marked “Isabel Nichol 1860”.
Condition: Very good to excellent. Netting is solid without any breaks or tears. There is one break in the ribbon ruching at the left side front; some shattering in the streamers of the back bow. [cs][ph:L]
