A feminine and elegant woman’s two-piece mauve figured silk reception dress c.1890, from the Texas Civil War Museum. The jacquard fabric is woven with narrow stripes alternating with strips of chevron twill. Supplemental threads create a pattern of vertical long-stemmed ivory and pink flowers with green leaves. Ivory faille is used to create pleated and draped inserts on the front of the bodice and the skirt.
The fitted bodice is styled with a pleated and draped surplice front opening, framing the contrasting ivory pleated high collar and a pleated ivory inset overlaid with a floral lace galloon in shades of rose and green. The back of the bodice is pleated at the center back, framing another piece of the same floral lace over an ivory insert. The patterned silk is used to create a pleated and draped band at the waist with the ends ending in a knotted bow at the center back. The bodice closes with hooks-and-eyes; the darts and seams are boned. A waist stay with the words “New York” woven into the ribbon is present.
The long narrow sleeves are puffed at the shoulders. A pleated ivory inset with the same lace overlay accents the lower edge of the sleeves. The sleeve openings are finished with pleated bands of the figured silk tied in knotted bows.
The unlined striped floral skirt is pleated and lightly draped at the front waist, with gauging overlaid with directional pleats at the center back opening. The top of the skirt is finished with self-fabric piping; there is no waistband. There is a pocket in the right side-front seam, a series of tape ties to adjust the draping at the back of the skirt, and a 3" self-fabric hem. The skirt has a contrasting center front panel of ivory faille, draped and tucked at the lower center front into a puffed rosette. The bottom of the panel has been draped and gathered where it is attached to an ivory glazed cotton lining. A plain, dyed-to-match silk underskirt is finished at the lower edge with 2½" deep ruffle of ¼" wide knife pleats. The bottom of the underskirt is faced with heavily starched sheer cotton woven in a grid pattern. A heavily-starched pleated dust ruffle of cotton organdy and cotton lace is also attached.
Condition: Good – very good.
Measurements: Bust 35", waist 25", skirt lengths 38½" front, 49" back, circumference 140". [cs][ph:L]
