1880s Woman’s quilted silk wrapper from the Texas Civil War Museum. The wrapper is made of embroidered aqua and brown lightweight silk taffeta, fully-lined in aqua silk, and partially wadded with wool batting.
The wrapper is styled with a fitted 4-piece back and a full-length loose front panel, self-fabric collar and lapels, long narrow coat sleeves with jockeys, and a gathered, gored skirt that joins the sides of the center front panel. The quilted wadding is used everywhere except the upper portion of the skirt. The wrapper has an almost full-length front opening with brass hooks-and-eyes used for the functional closure. A heavily starched muslin and pleated lace dust ruffle was added after the original construction.
The artistry of the design is shown in the use of the contrasting fabrics, embroidery, and finishing details. The majority of the wrapper is constructed with a plain weave copper brown silk. Aqua silk is used for the center front panel that curves into a deep quilted border on the lower skirt, the quilted self-fabric collar and jockeys, the cuffs on the sleeves, the curved patch pockets, and the full lining. An embroidered design of leaves and small flowers is worked in shades of very pale green, gold, and medium brown on the upper back, and all along the edges where the brown silk joins the quilted aqua fabric. A woven cord in aqua and brown accents the cuffs, pockets, and back waistline. The same cord is used for the tie belt, ending in a two-colored tassel; and for the decorative knotted closures that secure with large, pointed oval wooden button forms covered in knotted thread. The machine-sewn quilting is done in a horizontal diamond pattern.
Condition: Good; some fading on the aqua silk, stains at the bottom of the skirt.
Measurements: Bust 36", waist stay 27½", waist including loose front panel 40", back skirt length 46", overall front length 56", circumference at lower edge 124". [cs][ph:L]
