A majestic 3-piece traveling ensemble, c. mid-late 1880s, from the Texas Civil War Museum, consisting of a two-piece bustle dress and a matching jacket. The dress is made of wine-colored silk satin and matching silk velvet. The bodice and skirt are richly detailed with deep edgings of faced finger scallops. The overall effect is understated elegance.
The fitted satin bodice is cut with a darted front and a six-piece back, a center- front opening with silk self-fabric buttons, a standing collar with a lace frill at the top, and long narrow sleeves. A front insert of velvet continues around the bottom of the bodice and finishes the bottom of the sleeves. All of the satin and velvet edges of the bodice and sleeves are finished with beautifully-sewn finger scallops. The bodice is lined with white cotton twill and is fully boned.
The front of the satin skirt is framed with vertical panels of scalloped velvet and silk. Side panels of the skirt are gathered and draped to accent the draped and bustled back of the skirt. The bottom of the front of the skirt Is finished with a 4½"pleated ruffle with a straight hem. The bottoms of the sides and back of the skirt are finished with two 14" deep ruffles with scalloped hems, the bottom ruffle laid over a 5" deep pleated velvet ruffle. The skirt is lined with cotton and buckram; there are ties on the inside for adjusting the bustle and draping. The waistband has a center back hook-and-eye closure.
The fitted and flared velvet jacket is styled with an open collar, lapels, front hook-and-eye closure and long narrow sleeves. The lower body of the jacket flares slightly over the midriff and waist. Dyed-to-match silk ribbon bows accent the front of the jacket and the sleeves. The lining is wine glazed cotton; the slit opening of the sleeves is face with ivory glazed cotton.
There is no label but the quality of the construction indicates the workmanship of a very skilled dressmaker.
Condition: Very good-excellent. The construction is sturdy, with no holes or splits in the fabric. There is a small area of light underarm discoloration on the inside lining that is barely visible on the satin fabric. There are no stains or wear on the bottom of the skirt. There is some slight wear to the velvet around the neckline. A most magnificent display ensemble.
Measurements: Bodice bust 32", waist 24"; skirt length 40". Jacket bust 32", waist 24½". [cs][ph:L]
