An elegantly tailored 1880s woman’s 3-piece bustle dress plus matching coat from the Texas Civil War Museum. The ensemble is made from lightweight midnight blue silk and wool woven in a subtle scrolled design, with midnight blue velvet sleeves and accents. It is embellished with braidwork and matching fringe.
The closely-fitted tunic-length silk/wool bodice is styled with a velvet standing collar and long narrow velvet sleeves. The center front and center back of the bodice feature vertical panels of velvet accented with braidwork, beads, and self-fabric buttons. The bodice lining is pieced from several shades of brown cotton; there is no boning. The sleeves are lined with lightweight blue glazed cotton.
The unlined overskirt has pleats at each side front creating a draped effect in the front and a bustled effect in the back. The bottom edge is finished with knotted fringe.
The upper portion of the underskirt is made from dark blue glazed cotton. It has a flat, gored front with a gauged center back panel; the back gathers are secured at the back of the knee creating a flared effect under the overskirt. The lower edge of the underskirt is finished with a 14 deep silk flounce of the silk/wool constructed in four horizontal sections featuring a wide flat band, a narrower flat band piped on the upper edge, a band of wide offset box pleats, and a narrow band of directional pleats. There is a hem facing of very stiff, heavy glazed cotton.
The matching fitted knee-length silk/wool coat is styled with an open collar, lapels, button front opening, long narrow sleeves, and large patch pockets on the lower front. It is embellished with velvet piping and self-fabric buttons on the front opening, sleeves, pockets and hem. Fringe finishes the bottom of the pockets. The lining is blue glazed cotton.
The ensemble looks heavy but is remarkably lightweight.
Condition: Very good-good; some oxidation on the braid work, a few missing beads.
Measurements: Bodice bust 37", waist 31", back length 26". Skirt waist 28", length 39". Coat: Back length 41". [cs][ph:L]
