A charming toque c.1880 from the Texas Civil War Museum collection. The oval hat, mounted on a buckram frame, is made from brown silk velvet. The same brown velvet is used to make pleated bands adding interest to the crown and to create a turned-up brim along the lower edge. Fourteen bronze ½" metal circles with faceted edges are spaced around the brim of the hat; an additional 21 circles are sewn around the crown. Tan petersham ribbon, woven with a rust mosaic stripe, is twisted and turned as it surrounds the bottom of the hat; it is pinned in place with several decorative pins with small oval metal heads. The same ribbon is used for a composed looped bow sitting atop a bronze ostrich feather at the back of the hat; a velvet loop accents the front. The hat is lined with brown glazed cotton that has oxidized to olive green.
Condition: Very good. No stains or tears, very slight wear to the velvet along the top and bottom edges of the brim. The ribbon, metal trims, and feather are in very good condition. [cs][ph:L]
