Charming black hat c.1890s from the Texas Civil War Museum collection. Made from crisp black silk taffeta, this small hat sits on the back of the head. The buckram base is entirely covered with stiff, ruched black millinery netting. The crown is trimmed with a band of black silk taffeta – ruched, gathered and puffed to add depth and dimension. A ‘buckle’ created from tiny jet beads adorns the center of a bow at the front of the crown. A band of the same black silk formed into quilled rolls accents the back of the bonnet. The dark sheen of the black silk is brightened on the left side of the crown with a cluster of yellow silk flowers and bright green leaves. The brim is faced with a band of sheer ruched black silk. The hat is line with black glazed cotton.
Condition: Very good. No visible damage on the outside or inside of the hat. All trimmings are uncrushed and intact. [cs][ph:L]
